Next time you see a large police presence outside your local, it might not have anything to do with football derbies, alcopops or pay day.
It might just be sheer lunacy.
Last month, Sussex constabulary announced that it would deploy extra officers one night a month.
‘I compared a graph of full moons and a graph of last year’s violent crimes and there is a trend,’ explained the man behind the idea, Insp Andy Parr.
‘The moon has a strong influence on tides and magnetic forces can influence people’s psyche.’
Inevitably, this led to jokes about binge-drinking werewolves fighting outside kebab shops – but the inspector could be on to something.
European folklore has always suggested that the the cycles of the moon cause lunacy.
When Parliament dealt with mental health in the 1824 Lunacy Act, it was stated that madness was likely to occur during a full moon. “
