Healing crisis – Reflexology
Posted by tfootitt on February 20, 2007
I had my second reflexology treatment yesterday. Towards the end of the treatment my skin turned clammy, I started to have cold sweats and felt nauseous. I have had the lump in the throat feeling before when I have had Shiatsu treatments and believe that there is a blockage there. I guess whatever’s there just isn’t ready to move yet or maybe (fingers crossed) this is the start of it shifting
.
You could see this as relating to the throat Chakra and/or communication. I’ve been asked if there is something that I want to say or get off my chest before, if I knew I would certainly do it.
John Ball in his book ‘Understanding Disease’ explains it as ” on occassion the throat has the sensation of a lump in the region of the larynx although no swelling is palpable, and this is often the result of unexpressed grief being choked back and may go under the name of globus hystericus” (p122, 1990, ISBN 0852072295).
I want to continue to develop and open myself – if anyone has had a similar experience or has any suggestions to help, it would be great to hear from you.
Some of you may be asking what is a healing crisis?
”A healing crisis or aggravation, to a homeopath, is a temporary worsening of the patient’s symptoms during successive stages of homeopathic treatment. The healing crisis is considered a good sign. It suggests that the energetic remedy chosen to fight off the disease has adequately stimulated the body’s vital forces” (http://www.floweressencemagazine.com/aug02/healingcrisis.html).
I’ve found a great document that explains it really well at: http://www.inacrystalgarden.com/Healing_Crisis.pdf

Hi Tracy,
thank you for your reply.
I called my practictioner soon after posting my message here, and for once, he picked up the phone, was nice and helpful, told me pretty much the same as you (initital treatment : higher degree of change) and even said calling him was a good idea. I was a bit surprised, but happy, so I decided to go to the third session next week. After that, I guess I will be able to decide whether we keep working together or not (i.e. me looking for someone else).
Thank you for you support and wishes.
New Zealand will be great, for sure!
All the best to you in 2008!
Regards,
Erika

Hi Erika,
I’m wondering if you’ve found the right Shiatsu practitioner.
It doesn’t sound like the current therapeutic relationship you have is meeting your needs. Have you considered trying a different Shiatsu Practitioner?- Your current therapist may be able to refer you if you are comfortable to discuss this with them.
I can only answer you’re first question based on my own experience and everyones experience is unique. None of my responses to Shiatsu bringing things up has been the same. I haven’t had two big releases in two consecutive treatments, as you say sometimes it takes a while to work through things. I can say, that from my own experience, the treatment after the one that helped bring about a change has never had the same degree of change as the initial one.
I hope this helps and hope you have a wonderful holiday.
Regards
Tracy

Hi Tracy (and all shiatsu practitioners around),
you will probably answer “it depends”, but still…
Is there a link between how deep the practitionner goes during a session and the consequences (i.e. patient feels better, a lot better, or worse, a lot worse, etc.)?
To put it in context, I have a session planned next week, that is 3 weeks before I go on holidays for quite a long time to the other end of the world. Nothing against receiving some energy, but afraid of having a second “healing crisis”, which I really don’t want to take with me. Not sure the first crisis is over, actually…
Can’t talk abt it with my practitioner, he’s only available during sessions and even then, I don’t really get a chance to express how I feel .
Any advice/suggestion more than welcome !

Hi Erika,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re practitioner failed to advise you about the effects you might experience after a treatment. A lesson for us all.
I will certainly give the Devavani method a go.
Have a Happy & Healthy New Year!

Hi Tracy, Hi Evelyne,
I had my first shiatsu treatment 2 months ago with a long healing crisis. The practitioner did not tell me about it and I couldn’t get in touch with him. Very hard time, I think the lack of communication here even added symptoms.
Tracy, maybe you could try the Devavani method for your throat (http://www.kumar.it/devavani.htm). My qi gong teacher told me about it. I still have to wait a little bit to be able to try it myself since… I’ve got a cold !
But luckily, vicious circles can be broken.

Hi Evelyne,
Thanks for stopping by and adding a comment.
To be fair the practitioner did explain that it could happen to me during the treatment, but I made a conscious choice to focus on the effects of the treatment rather than the treatment itself within my post.
I had a look at your blog and really enjoyed reaing your current post.
Happy Blogging

I’m commenting old news but I think that healing crisis should be explained by the practioner BEFORE it happens, I mean during the first treatment, they should tell the patient want to expect, what it means and so on. I guess many give up after one session if they feel worse instead of continuing like you did.
I have a web site and a blog about foot reflexology which I practice in France (so English is my second language). Check them out and give me your comments.

Thanks Tash, I’ve definately not been put off the next treatment.
I’m feeling much better thanks, still feel a bit drained and have been sleeping for England but the nauseas gone (hooray!).
I’ve been working some points , mainly Liver 3 (http://www.acuxo.com/meridianPictures.asp?point=LR3&meridian=Liver) as outlined by your good self (I have also felt Ki moving through the extended meridian in my arm) and
Large Intestine 4
(http://www.acuxo.com/meridianPictures.asp?point=LI4&meridian=Large%20Intestine).
I’ll have a go at the pad over the weekend. Thanks for an effective treatment which has got my ki moving.
Looking forward to the next treatment.

hi Tracy,i feel quite guilty about making you feel unwell……….but as you say,it’ll be for the better soon! might i say, i did say it would happen. hope this hasn’t put you off for monday. as you’ve read up on the subject i’m sure you already know the steps you can take to speed up this part of the healing process in that, rest, sleep, water, are a must. try to refrain from caffeine/alcohol, also only eat light meals so that the blood that is being used in your healing doesn’t get shunted to your gut. one othe thing you can try is caterpillar walking with your thumb (the movement i use when I’m doing your treatment) or firm rubbing of the space under your big toes toenail and the first joint. start at on the top of your foot working all the way round to the space between the the pad of your big toe and the rest of your foot. this in reflex is your throat area plus a fw other things but working it until will meet will be stimulating your reflexes and aiding the blockages to move. if you need anything just call, tasha xx
