Pregnancy & Childbirth

Last month I attended a 3 day option on pregnancy and childbirth as part of my course. It was really enjoyable course, with many people sharing their own experiences, which I am very grateful for. I have treated a friend with Shiatsu through out her pregnancy but feel the course has given me a much better understanding of pregnancy in relation to both Eastern and western medicine. I also feel that I have much more to offer now.
I find it fasinating how ”the Oriental philosophy draws a parallel between life in the womb and to the 2.8 billion years of evolution of life on earth as it developed in the ‘Water phase’. This amphibian period is thought to correspond to 280 days of pregnancy in which the foetus evolves from a single cell to a muli cellular being.”(Shiatsu-do pregnancy & childbirth, Ray Ridolfi, 1983) This relates to 10 million years of evolution happening every day of pregnancy. We knew pregnancy was amazing but doesn’t that just blow you away!
Prior to and after the course I found magazines that I would normally buy and read were running articles on preganancy and childbirth, specifically looking at the use of Accupressure/Shiatsu in relation to it. Here are a few that are worth further reading;
- Providing pain relief through labour (Qi journal) http://qi-journal.com/TCM.asp?-Token.FindPage=1&-Token.SearchID=Labour
- The effects of Shiatsu on post term pregnancy (Shiatsu Society)http://www.shiatsusociety.org/public/newsletter/yates_ssn96.html
- Qi (the Journal of traditional Eastern Health and Fitness) Summer 2006 edition it has an interesting article on Acupressure during Labour and delivery written by Michelle Larson (not currently available on line).
